在剛結束的賽季裡，戰績開高走低，最後還是無法打進季後賽的海盜隊，決定在自由球員市場裡找幫手，來引導海盜年輕球員，他們趁著洋基忙著搞定投手群問題時，與洋基先發捕手Russell Martin達成2年1700萬美金合約協議，明年將由Martin來引導海盜投手群。
