莫言坦言，他寫電視劇本的目的很單純，就是賺錢。當時寫一集電視劇能賺1萬5，別人只能賺5000。但錢不是那麼好賺的，莫言曾經在山東大學的一次演講中說，每寫一部電視劇，人格上就好像受到了極大的侮辱。「每次你都會被低劣的電視劇導演橫挑鼻子豎挑眼。
